Fish diversity & production

  • Majority of the wetlands of Ganga and Brahmaputra basin sustain less than 50 number of fish species
  • Decline of fish diversity (23-54%) due to climatic variability and anthropogenic stressors from Gangetic wetlands
  • Gradual decrease in natural fish fauna production (especially SIFs) from majority of the wetlands
  • Decrease in fish production with reduced rainfall and increasing temperature showing influence on fish production from open waters
  • Invasion of exotics in rivers and wetlands with more pronounced impact on native fish fauna
