Activities/focus
- Detailed study of floodplain wetlands in West Bengal (3), Assam (2) and Kerala (1)
- SWOT analysis of wetlands, gathering of baseline information on ecology, fisheries and management regime
- Assessment of stakeholder’s perceptions on impacts of climate change on wetland fisheries
- Site selection, installation and demonstration of climate resilient pen enclosures (CRPS) and stocking of prioritized species in Kerala (Backwaters of Vembanad lake), Assam (2 wetlands) and West Bengal (3 wetlands)
- Model questionnaires preparation for assessment of climate change impact on wetland resources and its fisheries (stakeholder driven approach)
- Exploratory survey of floodplain wetlands in West Bengal (31), Assam (14) and Kerala (1)
- Assessment of stakeholders’ perceptions on impacts of climate change on wetland fisheries
- Monthly and/or periodic sampling for analyzing of important habitat parameters like physico-chemical parameters, ecological- primary productivity, chlorophyll concentration, plankton biomass and diversity, sediment biota (microbes and enzymes)
- Sampling of soil, macrophyte and water samples from floodplain wetlands in West Bengal (5)- Bhomra, Mathura, Akaipur, Khalsi and East Kolkata (sewage feed wetland); Assam (4)- 47-Morakolong wetland and Charan wetland in Morigaon district, Chaltia wetland and Urmal wetland in Kamakhya district and Kerala (1)- Backwaters of Vembanad lake to generate pilot-scale information on wetland carbon pool and sinking capacity
- Database strengthening through soil and water carbon samplings and analysis required for carbon budgeting of the wetlands
- Selection of sampling sites including floodplain wetlands (Bhomra and Mathura), Coastal wetland (Sunderbans) and Sewage-fed wetland (East Kolkata Wetland, Jagrasia) for analysis of diversity of Nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (NDAMO) bacteria (NC10 phylum) and its abundance as a methane sink in natural environment
- Assessment of impact of climato-environmental anomalies on tiny plankton community in Gangetic floodplain wetlands
- Survey to document opinions of fisher folks on potential candidate fish species that are both commercially lucrative and stress tolerant (thermal, water)
- Experiments with alternative candidate fish species like – Amblypharyngodon mola, Gudusia chapra, Labeo bata, Puntius sp., Ompok bimaculatus and Mystus cavasius have been initiated in NICRA pens
- Monthly sampling and updation of database is being done for Small Indigenous Fish Species (SIFs) to map their biological, ecological thresholds for spawning, climate preferendum for breeding
- On-field sensitization workshop with fisher folk associated with Vembanad lake in Kerala, regarding changing climatic patterns, climate change impacts and climate resilient adaptation options for fisheries
- Conducting Workshop on Climate Change and Inland Fisheries, which included scientists, research scholars and professors to have a collaborative exchange of knowledge
- Exchange of knowledge, data and logistic support in collaborative mode with state fisheries department
